The history and how to take care of Devon Rex

The Devon Rex will grab your attention with its wide-set eyes and triangular ears, but it will win your heart with its playful antics and outgoing personality. In addition to striking facial features, these miniature felines have fine wavy coats in a wide variety of colors and patterns.

History of the Devon Rex

These cats emerged from a natural mutation in the early 1960s in England. They have been described as aliens due to their looks and antics. The domestic shorthair cat mates with a stray cat with an unusual curl of fur. As a result, one kitten with curly hair was born, which was immediately noticed for its unique fur and was named Kirley.

Kirley’s owners believed that their cat shared a gene for curly hair with the Cornish Rex cat breeds. The cat was mated to female Cornish Rex cats to obtain kittens with the same coat qualities as the Cornish Rex breed. However, kittens were born with only straight hair. It was later discovered that another gene mutation was responsible for the unique wavy coat and low set, triangular ears, making the Devon Rex a very special breed.

Then more successful breeding program was developed to preserve the natural mutation carried by Kirley. In 1968, the first Devon Rex cat was imported into the United States, and by 1979 the breed was officially recognized by the Cat Fanciers Association.

The Devon Rex has even made an impact on pop culture. Rumor has it that director Steven Spielberg was inspired by his Devon Rex cat, when he creates movie characters such as Alien and Yoda.

Today Devon Rex is available in our breeder. However, the breed is still unusual enough to be a unique member of the feline family.

Taking caring of the Devon Rex

Get ready to give this cat some love. The Devon Rex is a sociable cat. It is happy to be in the company of people or other animals. While these cats are not as vocal as some breeds, they will definitely be seen and heard with an active temperament and vocal demeanor to get your attention.

Their outgoing nature makes them adept at learning tricks. Try clicker training to teach your cat to walk, sit, give a paw, etc. This training can strengthen the bond between owner and the cat, providing much-needed mental stimulation for this smart breed.

Provide your cat with plenty of toys and suitable perches and climbing poles. This breed is especially known for looking for elevated spots when playing or relaxing, so take this into account when preparing your home for the Devon Rex.

They especially interact with other animals, so with the right introduction and socialization, it should come as no surprise that these cats become cozy with other pets, including dogs. Whether you have other pets or not, be sure to provide a soft bed where your Devon Rex will have a comfortable place to keep warm.

Devon Rex requires minimal human maintenance. Since the coat of this breed has only sparse guard hairs that are prone to brittleness, it is best not to brush the cat at all. Instead, you can gently wipe the cat's fur with a damp cloth every week. Excessive grooming by you or your cat can lead to a receding hairline.

However, don't think that these cats are fragile. Instead, you will find that the Devon Rex has a lean, muscular body with long, athletic legs. The short coat and prominent features make the neck and chest look bony, but this cat is a powerful jumper.

You should pay attention to the accumulation of earwax. You may need to brush your cat's ears regularly to keep them from wax build-up and to prevent dirt and bacteria from building up.
